Two Iranian Army Officers Killed in Israeli Strikes
The broadcaster identified the fallen officers as Bahman Hosseini and Alireza Abiri, stating that funeral ceremonies for both would be held later Tuesday. The broadcaster said the two were killed while on a mission "to defend the country's skies."
The latest deaths stem from a rapid spiral of retaliatory strikes that began Sunday, when Israel bombed the Lebanese capital Beirut in violation of an ongoing ceasefire — prompting Iran to launch missiles at northern Israel. Israel responded with several successive waves of airstrikes against Iranian territory, with the exchange of fire continuing into Monday.
Iran's military subsequently announced it had suspended its strikes against Israel, while issuing a stark warning of a "crushing" response should Israeli attacks on Lebanon continue.
The current escalation is rooted in a broader conflict that flared in late February, when the US and Israel launched coordinated airstrikes on Iran, triggering Iranian retaliatory strikes against Israel and other regional countries hosting American military assets. A temporary ceasefire brokered on April 8 has since unraveled, with negotiations stalling over disputes about its implementation and subsequent developments across the region.
